“Lost souls make strong spirits”

Impressing exhibition of Nanon Morsink’s textil art sculptures and paintings at Galería Isolina Arbulu, Marbella

The first time I saw works by Nanon Morsink was when I was visiting the Art Walk Cómpeta some years ago. Seeing the work the first time I knew at once that I had met a very special talented artist. The happier I am now for the chance to visit the impressing exhibition of Nanon Morsink’s textil art sculptures and paintings at Galería Isolina Arbulu. Great pleasure to connect again with Nanon who’s way I have been following since.

Two figures symbolize several ways to connect with each other. Their arms are extra long to be able to get in touch with each other. They are in touch, but how? How easy this way of connecting can be changed and create another situation we all experience now in Corona times. Nanon Morsink, the creator of this couple and this exquisite exhibition demonstrates how easy connecting can be turned into separation. Still facing each other the long arms are used for embracing themselves. They become kind of a safety shield around each figure – Nanon demonstrates with this perfect symbolic arrangement what we experience just happening in our times.

Lost souls make strong spirits is the title of this exhibition in the beautiful GALERIA ISOLINA ARBULU who presents a most impressive choice of works by Dutch artist NANON MORSINK.

“My work is all about connection” explains the artist. She calls herself a multimedia artist, working with different materials. For this exhibition Isolina Arbulu choose carefully textil works from most different material.

The viewer will see a lot of lost souls mirrored in the figures that are partly painted on printed fabric or knitted with good Dutch wool, which traditionally was used for workers socks to wear in the wooden shoes. Other figures are knitted from ropes fishermen used for their nets and from plastic, found in the sea.

I don’t dare to imagine how Nanon hands may have felt and looked, knitting these very hard, rough and dirty materials and how many many hours she invests to create this impressive body of work! But Nanon laughs at this question, I just love to do this , she says, and I am always so curious to see how my creation will look.

There are not only knitted a lot of hours into these objects but also a lot of symbolic thoughts. The names of the works tell about it.

See this figures underneath. The horns are a sign of power and and are ready to fight but the bell is typically for animals to be found and be directed back to the crowd.

Humor plays besides all the serious background of the works a large role as well in the art work of Nanon Morsink. Very beautifully it is found in this installation – there is even a book about it! You can walk into the installation and you will have a lot of smiles discovering the most funny details. Each pair has a name of the personality featured – there is even one which only has one leg! “I had a neighbor with one leg”, says Nanon. Now you can meet him here 🙂

As a painter I am always most impressed by “paintings”. There is a series of muted women and another one with men portraits called “In my head”. Both genders portrayed in their speechlessness, but mute for very different reasons. The women’s portraits Nanon painted on printed fabric and finally embroidered them.

The series of men portraits painted on thin paper makes us wonder how this could be managed: all the portraits of the men ( I think there are 16) on thin paper are embroidered as well. What a fine work to embroider portraits painted on such fine paper!

Gallery Time in Marbella

A comment on our time in EsArte Gallery
and an exhibition in the artists home.

Life comes back to the art scene in Marbella. Many things are happening only in a weeks time!! Galleries invite for inaugurations, the FestiArte will show 150 artists and the author of this article invites you to see an exhibition in her home – in the “new normal”. Follow her tour through the exhibition at home on her videos.

Great Art Night at FestiArte

Great art nights at FestiArte!
Marbella 30.07.-02.08.2020

This is the first great exhibition which is planned for Marbella:
The FestiArte will take place in one of the prominent spots of the town. More than 100 artists in 60 tents are waiting to show their art and chat with the visitors! You are invited to have an exiting art night in a wonderful atmosphere!

I am real exited to participate in this event. It’s my first exhibition this year in which I can participate in person. I am so much looking forward to this event, to meeting the visitors, to a lot of chats with friends, the other artists and my collectors!

Charming photo of the FestiArte exhibition in the night
Great Art Night at FestiArte

Magic atmosphere strolling between artists and their art

I participated last year in this event and I loved it. Such a great atmosphere! A bit like a huge family on a campground. The atmosphere is fantastic and it’s great to stop by here and there and chat with the artists about their art! Like last year I will have a tent side by side with my fellow artist from Costa del Arte Collective, the symbolic painter Anouk Slegers. Come and visit us! We cherish rather similar color palettes, but our art couldn’t be more different!

As the exhibition will take place in high summer, the opening times are adapted to the weather: The FestiArte will open its tent doors daily from 5.30 pm to 12 midnight. So you will be sheltered from the heat and enjoy a magic and warm Mediterranean evening between art and artists and between the Alameda Park and the sea! I am sure it will be memorable art nights at FestiArte.
Last year a lot of tents also opened in the morning for their visitors.

The opening will be on Thursday, the 30th of July at 7.30 pm. Check out the FestiArte page fort time overview.

The excitement of preparing an exhibition

It’s always exciting to prepare an exhibition – so many things to think of. Which paintings to take, what has to go to the framer first, which materials do I need and much more. Its especially exciting if you have to hang your art in a tent that was not made for hanging art!!! On top: stronger winds may be expected!

If you want to visit my home studio…..

I topped this excitement by preparing a special “virtual home studio visit” which will be accessible a weekend before the FestiArte for my newsletter readers. I want to give a chance fo those who are not around to participate a bit. AND: As I am so super happy to finally have the chance to meet in person with a lot of people, I will make a special offer for a restricted time to my newsletter readers. They will have the first choice to reserve a painting which is on the list for FestiArte. A lot of work is waiting for me, but also a lot of fun! If you are interested in be included in this information, join my newsletter list at the end of this post!

Preparing the special offer

Some complication that don’t really help

I just wanted to open the mosquito screen for the cat and the little carpet was not flat – thats all what it needs to complicate your life! Fortunately it’s only a pulled tendon, but the doctors advice is to not walk and keep the foot high. So that not real a great help for preparation ….

Hope to connect with you at FestiArte – otherwise via my newsletter?

Last year in FestiArte – would be lovely to meet you this year!

I will do my best and I am positive to be at my tent – if necessary foot up. Fortunately I have as a great helper and organizer my husband at my side!

If we cannot meet in person, you can get news about this exhibition, the offer which goes with it, about exhibitions I visited and news and insights into an artist life by joining my newsletter list – always possible to cancel it when ever you feel like it!

Fascination of Glas Objects

Marbella Galeria Isolina Arbulu presents fascinating glas objects by Gala Fernández

This was a great surprise! I had seen some photos of the glas objects and was a bit reluctant to visit the exhibition – I tent to visit mainly exhibitions with paintings or photos. But as I like the Gallery of Isolina Arbulu and like to know what is happening in the art world of Marbella I made an appointment. How good I did it! I found fascinating glass objects in Marbella! It turned out that these glas objects had the power to fascinate!

Please click onto the images to enlarge and see the whole picture.

Organic Geometry – a collection of fascinating glass works

The exhibition “Organic Geometry” is part of an experimental project, a series of glass vases blown inside handmade copper wire geometrical structures by the artist and designer Gala Fernández Montero.

Nicely presented in a very puristic surrounding, getting their very special light that creates an interaction between the shadows and the objects, the glas works develop a special magic. The longer we looked at them, the all the more they revealed to us their special character and the more enthusiastic and fascinated we were. A good part of this was due to the sensitive comments of the knowledgeable gallery owner Isolina Arbulu.

The charm of these fascinating glass objects for me is a mixture of vintage atmosphere, workplace atmosphere and the poesy of an art work. I especially liked the transparent objects. They reminded me of places where fisher have their nets and you see these transparent glass balls. Some feeling of the good old times come up.

Award winning artist in Marbella

This exhibition was planned for March and like so many others had to be canceled. The artist had seen the venue but was then stuck due to the Covid 19 crisis and didn’t yet have the chance to see her exhibition. But next week she will fly over to Marbella and visit the gallery.

Gala Fernández Montero is a designer and artist. She is the winner of the ELLE design award 2020. As Isolina told us, she likes to look at her art work as usable objects – many of them can be turned into different positions and be used to hold things or be used as a vase.

Gala Fernández has moved between Spain, Italy, Mexico, France, England and Germany; He currently resides in Milan. He collaborates with international companies such as MOROSO and Sisley, although he also self-produces many of his design-art collections. Gala is artistic director of the AAMURANO blown glass line.

To see this fascinating glass objects in Marbella is definitely worth a visit. Isolina Arbulu is in the office mostly in the mornings. Best to make an appointment and enjoy the encounter with the art objects. Find all information here on the website of Galeria Isolina Arbulu.

Look “Beyond the Horizon” in Marbella

This week I visited another fantastic exhibition in Marbella. The Gallery Isolina Arbulu , one of the treasure in Marbellas gallery world is worth to be discovered. Till end of March Isolina Arbulu is showing a very fine and silente exhibition – a combination of photos and sculptors that are in a great dialog with each other. The photos are taken during her activity as a consultant in the poorest regions of the world by ANGÉLICA ARBULU. Angélica tries to show the beauty in rather isolated places that don’t attract attention on the first glance. A wonderful match with theses photos are the taking sculptures by Málaga artist STELLA KAMAZÓN. Built from recycled materials the figures make a great link to the geographical areas where the photos come from. Stella shows nearly faceless figures which are lost in an other isolated world, the world of technique, phone and internet.

I was already taken by this wonderful combination in the entrance hall – such a great dialog between these two art works!

Here is a small choice of the art works to be seen!

The atmosphere of the gallery is very inviting, situated in a beautiful workplace. It has the notion of a very private house. We were happy to have Isolina as our guide and then the gallery for ourselves after having made a telephone appointment! Its a recommendation to make an appointment to be sure you meet Isolina Arbulu in person and get the interesting information about the exhibition.

I loved the title “Beyond the Horizon” and this description very much, especially as I was also engaged with the horizon when I working on my “Desert Trip Print Series”.

It’s Gallery time: Marbella now!

My paintings finding a place in a gallery!

Before we left for the United States I had the pleasure to bring some of my paintings to the Art Gallery van Gestel in Marbella. This gallery is situated at the famous Orange 🍊 Place in the beautiful old town of Marbella since 30 years. To get the pictures there, we had to carry them through half the old town, no chance to get there by car. Fortunately, paintings on stretched  are very light and the sun was shining (as almost always!). I am very happy to see that my treasures found such a nice place to be seen and purchased 😊😊😊!

7DE7AC41-3AA6-41BD-9A40-CA0A87DF85EE

The gallery shows a lot of Spanish and international artists over two levels in one of this wonderful old Spanish houses. I feel very honored to be part of this collection!  Its worth a visit, I can tell!

Nicely enough we could help at once to place or hang my paintings and I could see how they add some joyful colors to the nice setting. If you happen to be in Marbella, don’t miss the Plaza de los Naranjos ( one of THE tourist magnets!) and visit the gallery, which is at one of the corners of this beautiful place!

The International Festival de Arte in Marbella, a review /
El Festival Internacional de Arte de Marbella, una reseña.

A real fascinating event took place last week in Marbella. The Festiarte, a great art show that featured more than 100 artists in 60 stalls by the organised by the town of Marbella and Javier Roman (Delegación Cultural del Ayuntamiento de Marbella (@delegacionculturamarbella) y por Marco Eventos Culturales).  We stayed 4 days and evenings – opening times were till 11 pm! – on the beautiful place with the Dali statues and the view to the sea. It was  a great community of artists and many many visitors, who had a lot of choice to see and buy interesting artworks of different kinds: pottery, statues, photography, painting and more.

The four days were a great adventure and success. And a real challenge! We got the tents with a nice lightening system but no hanging system at all. But with some tools, a lot of phantasy how to manage and a lot of patience everybody worked it out. A huger challenger was the wind, some days it had to be called storm. Coming back from a break we found a lot of the paintings on the floor, luckily there was no damage at our art! I took the opportunity to show some larger works, which got some attention.

A little memory to some other stalls….
