Mini Cuadros – Small works – Kleine Arbeiten

Costa del Arte Collective showing small works in Almuñécar!

The Costa del Arte Collective is quite excited. We are going to have an exhibition in Almuñécar in May – in the Espacio Creativo of Annabel Keatley. The exhibition will be opened on the 3rd of May and can be visited until the 24th of May. So I spent quite some time concentrating on Mini Cuadros. I am pretty sure, that it will be a wonderful exhibition. I already had a sneak preview of some of the works to be seen of my artist colleagues Annabel Keatley, Anouk Slegers, Lieuwke Loth and Sally Hirst.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of exclusive workshops held by Annabel, limited to only three participants for each workshop!
I am rather tempted to take part, as Annabel works with with special techniques – as all of the members of Costa del Arte Collective do.

I was rather engaged to create some mini cuadros, with time sitting in my neck, as the Art Walk Cómpeta is just a week before, starting at the April, 20th. So everything has to be ready soon!

I have been working on the Greenland series as well, making it a collection of five, acrylic on paper. They will be framed with museum glas. Pretty to look at. If you like to see the exciting photos of our Greenland journey tap here.

My new color preferences are shown in this series – still no name for it. They are 20x20x4 cm on stretched canvas and bring some energy to the room. It seems, I am just in love with orange and a bit of violet.

Coming soon – more information soon!

Lately I developed a great interest in trees. I am always fascinated by their aura, shapes and structure. We enjoy them on our walks in the country side but also from the terrace. The diversity of the Mediterranen plants and trees is impressing. Especially impressed I am by palm trees – they grow in the garden and in the wild, on the beach and in the parks, you find them from very small to tall, the Palm fronds towering high above our heads. So I lately started to paint some of them. Then I discovered, that there is already quite a collection….so I think, its an ongoing project that I share today with you!

Palm trees are fascinating me….Palmeras fascinantes..

And woods are something wonderful! Bosques son maravillosos!

These is not an assembly of Mediterranean trees – actually they reflect a holiday at the Baltic sea. You can find them in the entrance hall of the Apart Hotel Kaiser Karl in Bonn.

If you want to save the trees and the sea: carry one with you for your shopping! Or may be you want to rest your head on art?  I discovered this website and as I like to play, see here my results. If you want a print of any of my art works, here is your chance!

A neighborhood full of vivid art in Málaga

We had the pleasure to take part in an art walk in Málaga on a very sunny day in January. The Dutch artists Birgit Gerritsen and Els Wiering  from “Meet the artists in Málaga” showed us a neighborhood we had not seen before. Just near Picassos birthplace to the north we walked into an area full of neglection and full of art. Countless street art paintings were  waiting for us, telling the story of creativity, anger and desperation. We were very touched! Have a look and don’t miss this area when you come to Málaga.

Admiring street art and artists studios in Málaga

The walk trough all this bold and engaging art was fantastic, but not the only highlight of this day! We had the chance to meet 5 artists, one in the street and 4 in their studios, each of them  creating very different art work. Like always, it is so interesting to meet an artist in her/his studio and get in touch in a different way with art!
In one of the streets we had the pleasure to observe a well known Málaga street art artist at work, his Artist name is “Doger”, but you might find him more easily in social media under Jonathan Morillas.
We met the sculptor Juan Vega Ortega, who works in a very traditional way with wood and creates most moving statues which you may see in one of the religious processions. We met Victoria Maldonado who shares her studio with José Luise Valverde – a “black and white” couple. Victoria is making most delicate organic-like figures from different materials, mostly white, while José is working with lots of black paint and manages to make us feel like being in the darkness. With time your eyes get used to the darkness and you discover more and more. Cuban artist Rodolfo Llopiz is working in an impressing printing studio with most different printing techniques and showed us a bit of his art.

It was a great walk – don’t miss it when you get the opportunity!

Memories of Exhibiting at the 10th Art Walk Cómpeta in 2018!/ ¡Recuerdos de exponiendo en el 10. Art Walk Cómpeta en 2018!

This was my first experience with exhibiting at an Art Walk in Spain! I had some experience with Open Studios as long as I had my studio in Bonn. I love this kind of exhibition because it gives so much value to the visitors and artists! Great way to connect with art, artists, art lovers and a village or area of a town! It was a great experience for visitors and artists!

Getting ready, transportation of a lot of paintings, preparing the room that I shared with the photographer Nikki de Gruchy, meeting many fellow artists, for  four days receiving a lot of visitors from different countries and many good friends, walking through the narrow streets and on the steep stairs of Cómpeta:   what a lot of impressions to take in!  Now looking back I can say, it was a great event and I am very happy I was a part of it! And very lucky that I had a lot of support! Many thanks to Lieuwke Loth and the team to making this Art Walk Cómpeta possible!

Wonder of transformation – from old to new!

I had to reorganize my studio – space was needed, a disturbing problem with many artist studios. So this was my opportunity to undertake a serious inspection of my collection of paintings. Some made me smile, they are still dear old friends and it was a very warm reconnection. Some clearly didn’t  pass the check. I build a nice staple of “ready to be re-worked again”.

Reworking a painting is a tricky task. In the end it asks for a lot of boldness, courage and “letting go”. But paintings on this staple are not all boring but have some very nice parts.  So I am tempted to “save” these parts – against all experience that for me and my style of painting it is nearly impossible to create an authentic, lively and balanced abstract work while trying to save some parts. Working on an older painting of course keeps also some risk: You never know if you will manage to make it a better painting despite all your work…..so  the question, did I succeed?

As an abstract painter I work with many layers to create depth in a painting without constructing something like a perspective. So working on an older work is interesting as it always has in store already quite some layers and if I don’t whiten the whole painting the previous painting will speak through the new layers. Here I show you some of my re-worked paintings of the last months. Do you see the connection?

Tapp to enlarge.

“Metamorphosis” had already gone through some changes, but I was not too pleased with the result. So after some months I said “Good bye” to the Metamorphosis and it developed into a “Wonder Flower”. This one I did without trying to “save” parts, but elder parts very nicely fit with the newer parts.

Tapp to enlarge.

The “Vancouver service street” holds nice memories but it lost in the “survival of the best”. It has undergone a very bold change. You see the influence of the under laying layers? How do they influence the new composition?

Tapp to enlarge.

This one gave me  a hard time as I liked so many featured in it but never could sort out how to make it a complete painting. So I loved it and I hated it. I started this work in Tuscany, where I spend several summer painting. Definitely I was in love with the upper part. I fought to keep the red one, but it turned out to look like a big whale…so it had to go, so sorry dear red!   Here you see, which parts survived and which not.

Tapp to enlarge.

These is also a painting from my “Fluid Periode” which I looked at and I liked it but never felt it was finished. But as I liked the flow and the style and the colours , I didn’t want to destroy it, so I did only little changes, like deepening some darker parts, darken with a pink the very light part at the left and interrupt the light horizontal part by taking down a little bit the green. Very small differences that made a notable difference to me. Now it has become a harmonic painting for my taste. What do you think?

If you want to see more changes – look at these paintings in a room!

Just right for the Christmas time I am invited to my 9th exhibition this year…..I am happy to participate in an exhibition that was set up by a truly dedicated man to art: Rafael Fernandez Pacheco. We met at the ART WALK Cómpeta (which will start this year at Easter Saturday!) and ever since, I am following Rafael on Facebook. Gives me a great insight into the art at the coast. It feels as if he is visiting and writing about two to three exhibitions a day – wonder when he ever sleeps.

I was so lucky to participate with 5 of my paintings. My artist colleague Anouk Slegers from Costa del Arte Collective participated as well.
Estaba tan feliz de participar con 5 pinturas.

A little Greenland Series – eine kleine Grönland Serie -Una pequeña serie de Groenlandia.

A look behind the curtain:
The transformation of an adventure to an artwork!

The journey to Greenland was very impressive. So I was intrigued to dip a bit deeper into my memories and see it all with the painters eyes. Here are the first results, more hopefully to follow! I had a lot of fun to convert my memories and photos into paintings. It was quite a new experience for me, as I usually don’t work with photos.. Here you can see, how I worked .

16.12.2019
Meanwhile some of the original paintings are sold. As this charming paintings have a lot of friends I decided to offer a Limited Edition of Fine Art Prints of the “Little pink house” series.  As a subscriber to my newsletter you will be the first to be informed about the release date. For four days you have the opportunity to shop the prints at special prices before it is made public via social media.

Back to the artist journey……

This painting is a emotional memory, I started with.

Then I took a series of photos and worked on it…… click to enlarge!

I was fascinated by the atmosphere and the loneliness in a repellent nature….click to enlarge!

So the little pink house became a symbol of a place of shelter and warmth….click to enlarge!

Most of these paintings are very small, (25x35cm on paper) like the settlements are very small in a vast and wide landscape. This is the color story of one on the paintings. Click to enlarge

Traveling to the ice in Greenland – photos of an exceptional adventure

As a traveller and artist I have had for long the dream to go to Greenland and see the ice. The shapes and the colors of the ice have always fascinated me and I was eager to see it in reality. And so we went on that journey, 10 days, very comfortably traveling with an explorer 🚢 ship into the arctic circle on the west coast of Greenland, which is the more inhabited coast.

This is where we were: we sailed mostly in the Arctic Circle. On our last day we made an excursion to see the inland ice, the ice shield that covers the whole island and is coming down from this glaciers through the fjords. This year it was melting exceptionally.

On our journey we encountered a completely different, somehow unbelievable world! We anchored near small settlements, undertook some exciting excursions on foot and on small boats (canoe, tender boats and fishering boats) and never knew quite well where we would go next, as the ice was so extremely rich this year. Some of our destinations were not accessible because of the extremely dense ice. Floating icebergs would block our way to the destination. We were very touched by the majestic icebergs floating silently on the sea. The journey also was adventures in the respect of entering a completely different climate zone and experiencing such a different way of life, all so far from our imagination!

The ICE! We were so impressed by the ice, we took endless photos. Each iceberg was so special and such a miracle, it left us breathless and full of awe. Imagine some of these icebergs are as big as a street block!

And if you would like to have the feeling of traveling between the icebergs, see this video!!! Here the fishing boat had to turn around , we were locked in.

And now the Artist…..

I started painting …..Dreaming about Greenland was a painting I did far before our journey, not knowing what to expect, but I think somehow it touched the spirit of what we then experienced. The other two paintings are the start of a series I want to make inspired by this  journey! I hope I can live up to it – a big challenge for me to work with inner and outer pictures!

The Power of Art – How Paintings change your Room

A painting is a very powerful instrument to give spirit and life to your office or home. Depending on style, color and size it “makes”the room or it adds kind of statement, that you want to make. A painting as well reveals a bit about your personality. A painting in your room is what the eyes are in the face: they attract because they are speaking, they can hide something and they can reveal something about your mood, your spirit, your personality.

Two paintings, that “make” the entrance hall of an Apartment Hotel in Bonn

Wood 1 and Wood 2 were inspired by a holiday I spend on the Darß – a peninsular in the Baltic sea. Riding with the bicycle through the endless woods at the coast with its thousands of rather straight trees and the changing lights impressed me a lot.

Now these large paintings (145×160 cm and 160×145 cm) are the lead theme for  the design of this entrance hall of the Apartment Hotel Kaiser Karl in Bonn. They add some charme and character to the hall and they clearly give the mission to the visitors, that this is not a simple business place but a house with personality and individuality.

If you are in Bonn, feel free to visit the hotel. The staff will be happy to show you my paintings. You will find more in a permanent exhibition of paintings by me on the souterrain. I found this photos and hotel information at Hotel.com Kaiser-Karl-Apartmenthotel

Self discipline-Selbstdisziplin-autodisciplina

The summer invites me to leave behind some routines in order to create room for new things. As I have some time, paintings are all gone to two upcoming exhibitions, I decided to abstain from my most loved colors blue and turquois and from licorice. I had fallen in love with yellow – the experiment is thrilling but a true exercise in selfdiscipline – to abstaine from my familiar way of working is a challange. With licorice I was not very successful.
