Colors of the desert – Colores del Desertio – Die Farben der Wรผste

Impressive Vastness of the Desert

I am very much attracted to deserts. For me driving or walking in these untouched and so surprising landscape is always stunning, sometimes frightening, always touching. My deepest amazement is to be in such an inhospitable and in part intoxicatingly beautiful landscape in which its for any creature an incredible art to survive.

An artist journey

Here I share some impressions from our journey to Death Valley and the surrounding desert AND at the bottom of this page some news of my artist journey!!!!!

The photos cannot reflect the real impression but may be give an idea about what can be experienced in the desert. (All photos made with my iPhone camera) and the paintings hopefully reflect my personal experience of the desert! Enjoy!

Weather – Sandstorm in the desert

When we headed towards Death Valley we had to pass near areas of Los Angles which had terrible fires and a lot of smoke. The view of the landscape was partly blurred and we didn’t know if this was smoke, fog or a sandstorm. It was a sandstorm which offered most amazing and beautiful views and transformed the landscape from second to second.

The “Desert Trip Prints”

Our stay in the desert was deeply impressive and I started to create a series of digital paintings. So I am walking on  a new and quite exciting artist paths.  As soon as I feel my Desert Trip Series is competed I will publish it and offer prints. I have never before offered prints, so finding the right format and paper and especially an experienced Fine Art Printer was a journey in itself. But now I am happy with the one I finally found – the first prints look beautiful!!! I assume I will be able to release this edition, which will be a limited edition about mid of January.

“The little pink house” Greenland prints

Last year I painted a series inspired by our journey to Greenland. As some of the original acrylic paintings are already gone,  I decided to release at the same date as well a limited edition of the “The little pink house” Greenland prints so they are available to an affordable price for those who love them. See the development of the original Greenland paintings here.  If you want to be one of the first to get to see the full edition and first special offer, join my newsletter here.

Kunst in den Hรคusern…. Art in Homes

The one who views the painting is as well the one who finishes the painting, because he sees it in a specific way. He or she see it in a way the painter has not seen it when painting it. That is the fascinating thing about paintings that are not defining their subject to the end or work with open or no themes.
I know my paintings from the auro they have in the studio. I am always surprised to see, how much pantings change their auro depending on the surrounding they are and how much they do influence their surrounding. In this blog serie I want to present some of my paintings in their new home.

Did you ever dream about having your own Gallery?

Gallery at Home in Winter Park

I have been venturing the idea to make our home a place to feature exhibitions time by time, to make it an event ย gallery. That would be very convenient for me as an artist, but it was more a thought than a plan. So when I heard about Gallery โ€œArt at Homeโ€ I was very keen to see it and meet the people who have the courage and spirit to do it in real!

Veronique Benouaich has maintained ย and nourished her dream of a gallery of her own. She always enjoyed art very much. When moving from Paris to the South of France she became very good friends with many artists. When moving from France to Winter Park in Florida she finally ย fulfilled the dream of establishing ย a gallery ย in the ย new house near Orlando.

Veronique and her husband

She brought over many of the delicate art works from her artists friends in France and she and her husband transformed their new house into a space that served as a gallery and as a home. Regularly she presents new artists besides her rather steady exhibition. A Vernissage and the Finissage are the two official days for the gallery show, but visits of this beautiful white home and gallery are welcome in between by appointment.

Featuring a Korean Artist and several French artists in Winter Park

We had the pleasure to see some very delicate and explorative art by some of Veroniques artist friends and the featured Korean artist Hye Shin, who works with textil and paper elements.

A ย very attractive privat art exhibition

I enjoyed very much the visit and Veroniques explanation of the outstanding art works and the ideas behind them and unusual materials that were used. Itโ€™s a very special chance to look at art in a ย private atmosphere.

I remembered that two of my first exhibitions took place in the stunning house of my friends who were so friendly to offer there white walls to my paintings and we had a great time inviting their friends and mine.

Do you have experience with privat exhibition as an artists or visitor? What do you think about it?

If you happen to be in the Orlando region and you want to enjoy the exquisite visit to โ€œArt in a Homeโ€ you ย will find all information atย Daver Art Gallery ย !ย

Itโ€™s Gallery time: Marbella now!

My paintings finding a place in a gallery!

Before we left for the United States I had the pleasure to bring some of my paintings to the Art Gallery van Gestel in Marbella. This gallery is situated at the famous Orange ๐ŸŠ Place in the beautiful old town of Marbella since 30 years. To get the pictures there, we had to carry them through half the old town, no chance to get there by car. Fortunately, paintings on stretched ย are very light and the sun was shining (as almost always!). I am very happy to see that my treasures found such a nice place to be seen and purchased ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š!

7DE7AC41-3AA6-41BD-9A40-CA0A87DF85EE

The gallery shows a lot of Spanish and international artists over two levels in one of this wonderful old Spanish houses. I feel very honored to be part of this collection! ย Its worth a visit, I can tell!

Nicely enough we could help at once to place or hang my paintings and I could see how they add some joyful colors to the nice setting. If you happen to be in Marbella, donโ€™t miss the Plaza de los Naranjos ( one of THE tourist magnets!) and visit the gallery, which is at one of the corners of this beautiful place!

Visiting a Facebook Artist Friend 4000 miles from home

Have you ever visited a โ€œFriendโ€ you only met on Facebook?

Are you really my friend?โ€œ I once saw an exhibition in MassMoCa (the largest modern art museum in US – absolutely worth a visit) which had this title. A photographer traveled through the world to meet many of ย her Facebook friends! It was such an impressive exhibition and idea.
Last week I met my Facebook friend Anne Bedrick Fine Art in Palm Springs whom I โ€œknowโ€ since some time, we had several little chats going forth and back. Anne is a super organized person and has built up her art career in the last years with success. She was definitely one of the reasons I am in Palm Springs now. Planing our trip to California I remembered that she had moved here and I startet to collect information about the place and it sounded quite tempting! So we are here!

A very special event: Visiting a Facebook Artist Friend!

It was a great meeting, wonderful to chat with this fellow artist and to see her beautiful paintings in real that were already so familiar to me !!! We both are colorists, we love colors and cannot do without it. Anne shares her studio with her little dog, while my studio company is Miez, the cat. Anne is one of the best organized artists I know. She showed me her organization system to follow up her paintings, great! I wish I was disciplined enough to adopt this system. She even makes a little exact plan for her exhibition walls in the next art fair!

I LOVE TO GET TO KNOW NEW ARTIST FRIENDS!
Did you ever visit a Facebook friend? How is your experience? And do you have a studio company pet?

Anne and two of her โ€œCut inโ€ creations

The exact plan for her next booth! How I admire that! My way is more : come, see, hang ๐Ÿ™‚

I call it an organized working place !

Everyone has a bathroom – everyone has room for original art!

A studio company who doesnโ€™t talk and criticizes too much is a real help! My cat is doing her job very good, but she loves to place herself on not quite dry paintings โ˜น๏ธ

New York, New York! My Artist Dream comes true!

NEW YORK, NEW YORK! An artists dream comes true!

What an excellent and exciting day! At the 19th of Octoberย we crossed over by ferry from New Jersey to freezing cold New York , an adventure in itself! My husband nicely helped me to transport 16 (!) paintings and 12 frames- you cannot imagine what a large suitcase we carried around ( besides the other 4 large ones on our flight from Spain to New York). I had put down a wish this year in May in the Artist 2 Life CVP 19 program,ย which I attended. Myย wish was to present my art in New York! Not long after doing this, I was contacted by a representative of the gallery!ย ย Life takes wonderful paths sometimes!

All the paintings were accepted but then I kept 4 and Ieft 12 of the 30×30 cm series at SAPHIRA&VENTURAย GALLERYย ย in central Manhatten. Can you imagine, I was standing in that gallery, a dream becoming trueย and didย not manage to separate from all of my paintings! Somehow they became my kids.

Great surprise gave me the gallery: 4 of my paintings were presented the same evening in the show โ€The bonds of loveโ€ and I could be present at the opening which was well visited and even added a wonderful performance of which you here see only the mask! The exhibition is to be seen till 28th of October. What a story! My paintings will be presented in several shows over the year 2020! Super exciting!
PS If you would like to know about the Internet program of Art2life CVP19 let me know! I did enjoy it very much and it inspired my art enormously!

Hello Picasso! Hello Mรกlaga!

Hello Picasso! Hello Mรกlaga!

Picassos birthplace is Mรกlaga. As one of its very famous sons he is a visitors magnet and gets quite some attention with a birthhouse to be visited, a Picasso museum and of course a celebration of his birth day. This year in October it would have been his 124 birthday which is celebrated with an โ€žOctubre Picassianoโ€œ. Many events will take place and artists willl exhibit paintings that are related to Picasso.

I was invited but hesitating ย whether to take part in this challenge or not. I am not so much the artist who follows a concept. But good thing came out of it: strolling through the Picasso Museum I started to get more involved with the idea of doing a painting inspired by the great masters work. I fell especially in love with his pink period and the animals he painted. This months you can see my painting in the Galeria Javier Romรกn in Mร laga together with 30 more surprising art works. ย Entrance free and just round the corner of Picassos birthplace in Mร laga. The exhibition is open till 20th of November.

NEWS after a busy summer – un verano occupado – nach einem intensivem Sommer

A very productive summer! More than 20 paintings finished!

Looking back: This summer seems to have been very intensive. Family visits, expositions, art fairs, a lot of traveling and CVP 19.

Time by time an artist needs some new input besides visiting museums and exhibitionsย  or looking for inspiration in the surrounding. So I decided to embark on an internet course which is called: “Creative Visionary Path”. Nicholas Wilton and his team delivered a workshop that was impressive with all its wealth of information, practical examples and personal attention that was given,ย  despite having hundreds of attendees. I really was impressed by the quality of teaching and organization.

It has been a very good, highly interesting and very supporting experience!!!! Three months (and more) full of information, explanation and videos, life calls, painting, artist community and a lot of experimenting and learning! I am still digesting the information I got and the techniques that I experimented with and the experience I made. In one sentence: it was all worth it. If you want to know, just let me know via Email

If you want to have a short insight into my working style, have a look here:

Creating while traveling – a special challenge

As I am not a special friend of water color (quite honestly: I don’t know how to handle them) neither of crayons, I have not done a lot for my art practice, when traveling. From CVP something special I took out for me (besides many good other things) was working with sketchbook and gouache. Normally I am not a fan of neither the one nor the other –

Artist studio on a hotel table

this has changed. I was very happy while traveling to have the gouache colors with me, who are a bit like acrylic but make working so much easier when traveling – and so much cleaner. So I could go on with my 30×30 cm boards even in a hotel or in a friends house. ย And it probably will serve me again for our next journey which is already planed!

The harvest: More than 25 new paintings!

More than 20 panels, all 30×30 cm, (partly wood, carton or hard board) I have been working on. A small choice I will show you here:

If you want to see all the 25 panels that were done since May, tapp here.ย ย You will find a (nearly) full overview over the works.

Picassos birthday 18.10.19 – next art event in Mรกlaga!

In October, accompanying Picassos birthday, a lot of events will take place in Mรกlaga. One of it will be an exhibition of Picasso inspired art works in the Galeria Javier Romรกn, which is only some steps away from the birth place of Picasso at the Plaza de la Merced.

I painted a Picasso inspired painting for this show – as well did my artist friend from Costa del Arte Collective, Anouk Slegers. In preparation for this painting I visited the Picasso museum (which is worth while a visit!) and studied some books featuring his life and his work. As always, the more you learn about an artist, the more interesting he gets. I was especially fascinated by his blue and pink period – no wonder, I love pink and you will find it in many of my paintings! And his paintings of animals fascinated very much, especially the cats – partly in deconstruction ways and ever so expressive! So I was inspired by these most admired items! Come and see! The exhibition will be open till 18th of November – while I will be still on the other side of the big sea!

This is just a little part of the painting….

The cat who didn’t catch the bird.

Next Art Event in Germany! CONTEMPORARY ART RUHR !

Now, that the summer comes to an end, the next events are already set.

Some of my art will travel and be presented by “Javier Roman Galeria” Mรกlaga, in October in Essen, Germany, at the ART RUHR – an art fair that focuses on innovative ย art. Unfortunatelyย  I can not attend the show, – I will be in the USAย  meanwhile.

The fair will be situated in the beautiful Zeche Zollverein – such a pity I cannot see it and YOU all! Its quite exiting for me! While my paintings travel to the C.A.R., I will be visiting some New Yorker Galleries that I know through Instagram and I am curious to see them in reality.

Planning the next exhibition with the Costa del Arte Collective in Nerja!

The Costa del Arte Collective is applying to have a show in Nerja next year March! Keep you are fingers crossed, that we manage to get into this very beautiful communal space! I will keep you posted.

I hope you make it to the CAR in Essen, when you are in Germany! Or hopefully we can meet in Nerja! You will gain interesting impressions any way and who knows, maybe a original art work for your soul and home! If you are interested in one of the 30×30 cm art works that I am showing here, let me know!

Have a good start back into the second part of the year!

What a busy art time I had! The Art Walk in Cรณmpeta in April, “Mini Cuadros” in Almuลˆรฉcar in May, the International Festival of Art in Marbella in June and now showing till July ” We can do”, an exhibition of 13 lady artists, in Cala de Mijas in the Casa de Cultura.

Next exhibition: We can do it! in La Cala de Mijas!

The Inauguration will be Friday, 28th of June at 8 pm! I will participate with two or three paintings. Two of my fellow artists from Costa del Arte Collective will show there works too: Anouk Slegers and Lieuwke Loth! This exhibition was curated by Rafael Fernandez Pacheco, who is a great art lover and probably features every exhibition to be seen in Mรกlaga. This is the third exhibition I am invited to participate!!! Would love to see you there!

The International Festival de Arte in Marbella, a review /
El Festival Internacional de Arte de Marbella, una reseรฑa.

A real fascinating event took place last week in Marbella. The Festiarte, a great art show that featured more than 100 artists in 60 stalls by the organised by the town of Marbella and Javier Roman (Delegaciรณn Cultural del Ayuntamiento de Marbella (@delegacionculturamarbella) y por Marco Eventos Culturales).ย  We stayed 4 days and evenings – opening times were till 11 pm! – on the beautiful place with the Dali statues and the view to the sea. It wasย  a great community of artists and many many visitors, who had a lot of choice to see and buy interesting artworks of different kinds: pottery, statues, photography, painting and more.

The four days were a great adventure and success. And a real challenge! We got the tents with a nice lightening system but no hanging system at all. But with some tools, a lot of phantasy how to manage and a lot of patience everybody worked it out. A huger challenger was the wind, some days it had to be called storm. Coming back from a break we found a lot of the paintings on the floor, luckily there was no damage at our art! I took the opportunity to show some larger works, which got some attention.

Press

Very happy was the Costa del Arte Collective about a nice article in EuroWeekly, written by Nicole King! Thank you Nicole!

I see black – Ich seh schwarz – Veo negro

Lately I started with a lot of experiments – time by time an artist needs some freshness in her/his head and new inspiration. Finding new ways, collect new experience, has to question and expand her/his style. See some of the experiments here.

I give me a rather hard time, as I try to prepare for quite some traveling lying ahead of us. To stay tuned in my painting praxis I decided to take a sketchbook. I am not a great friend of sketchbooks and do not really a praxis. I like big formats and acrylic paint – that is quite a dirty job and asks for a lot of material. My trial with water color nhttps://artgoppellandhampel.com/?p=3384&preview=trueever gave me any satisfaction. So now I try how works Gouache. Quite fine, I can say after my first trials.

I love the old farmhouses in Andalusia, with all there add-ons and partly deconstructions they seem to tell a story of live. So I was fascinated by this one near Tarifa. The dog I fall in love with on my walk at the Open Studios Gaucรญn. You will find a photo of her there. If you are interested in this art walk, read more here.

My passion in painting is color. I could say: my painting is all about color. So now I went on a diet. A strong challenge to brake familiar habits. The sweet Lana, the dog above,ย  belongs to this series.

Some of the paintings are on wooden board. It gives a lot of possibilities to be mal treated. You can cut it, scratch it, work with hard tools on it. It invites all kind of spatulas. Some of this treatments a canvas would not be so happy with. Other experiments are on paper DIN A 4. Somehow a much smoother process.

Normally I love to work with rather bold and vibrant colours. So the challenge lies in tamed colours. This ones are not quite tamed, the motto was more: Go wild….

This are my experiments with a very reduce color palette. A lot of interesting new experiences through diet! Sometimes I feel very hungry for my familiar food ๐Ÿ™‚ Wonder what comes next.

Next comes an exhibition in Marbella in which I and the members of Costa del Arte Collective will be taking part.ย  More than 90 artists will show there work in the Avendida del Mar – that’s in the center down to the sea. Opening the 20th of June at 19:30 to 23:00ย  till 23rd of June, open from 16:30 to 23:00 hours.

Very much hoping to see you there!

I was rather engaged to create some mini cuadros, with time sitting in my neck, as the Art Walk Cรณmpeta is just a week before, starting at the April, 20th. So everything has to be ready soon!

I have been working on the Greenland series as well, making it a collection of five, acrylic on paper. They will be framed with museum glas. Pretty to look at. If you like to see the exciting photos of our Greenland journey tap here.

My new color preferences are shown in this series – still no name for it. They are 20x20x4 cm on stretched canvas and bring some energy to the room. It seems, I am just in love with orange and a bit of violet.

Coming soon – more information soon!

Trees , trees, treesโ€ฆ..Arbolesโ€ฆ.Bรคume!!!

Para uso en espanol hay traductor de Google en mi pagina web

Lately I developed a great interest in trees. I am always fascinated by their aura, shapes and structure. We enjoy them on our walks in the country side but also from the terrace. The diversity of the Mediterranen plants and trees is impressing. Especially impressed I am by palm trees – they grow in the garden and in the wild, on the beach and in the parks, you find them from very small to tall, the Palm fronds towering high above our heads. So I lately started to paint some of them. Then I discovered, that there is already quite a collectionโ€ฆ.so I think, its an ongoing project that I share today with you!

Palm trees are fascinating me….Palmeras fascinantes..

And woods are something wonderful! Bosques son maravillosos!

These is not an assembly of Mediterranean trees – actually they reflect a holiday at the Baltic sea. You can find them in the entrance hall of the Apart Hotel Kaiser Karl in Bonn.

If you want to save the trees and the sea: carry one with you for your shopping! Or may be you want to rest your head on art?ย  I discovered this website and as I like to play, see here my results. If you want a print of any of my art works, here is your chance!

A neighborhood full of vivid art in Mรกlaga

We had the pleasure to take part in an art walk in Mรกlaga on a very sunny day in January. The Dutch artists Birgit Gerritsen and Els Wieringย  from “Meet the artists in Mรกlaga” showed us a neighborhood we had not seen before. Just near Picassos birthplace to the north we walked into an area full of neglection and full of art. Countless street art paintings wereย  waiting for us, telling the story of creativity, anger and desperation. We were very touched! Have a look and don’t miss this area when you come to Mรกlaga.

Admiring street art and artists studios in Mรกlaga

The walk trough all this bold and engaging art was fantastic, but not the only highlight of this day! We had the chance to meet 5 artists, one in the street and 4 in their studios, each of themย  creating very different art work. Like always, it is so interesting to meet an artist in her/his studio and get in touch in a different way with art!
In one of the streets we had the pleasure to observe a well known Mรกlaga street art artist at work, his Artist name is “Doger”, but you might find him more easily in social media under Jonathan Morillas.
We met the sculptor Juan Vega Ortega, who works in a very traditional way with wood and creates most moving statues which you may see in one of the religious processions. We met Victoria Maldonado who shares her studio with Josรฉ Luise Valverde – a “black and white” couple. Victoria is making most delicate organic-like figures from different materials, mostly white, while Josรฉ is working with lots of black paint and manages to make us feel like being in the darkness. With time your eyes get used to the darkness and you discover more and more. Cuban artist Rodolfo Llopiz is working in an impressing printing studio with most different printing techniques and showed us a bit of his art.

It was a great walk – don’t miss it when you get the opportunity!

Memories of Exhibiting at the 10th Art Walk Cรณmpeta in 2018!/ ยกRecuerdos de exponiendo en el 10. Art Walk Cรณmpeta en 2018!

This was my first experience with exhibiting at an Art Walk in Spain! I had some experience with Open Studios as long as I had my studio in Bonn. I love this kind of exhibition because it gives so much value to the visitors and artists! Great way to connect with art, artists, art lovers and a village or area of a town! It was a great experience for visitors and artists!

Getting ready, transportation of a lot of paintings, preparing the room that I shared with the photographer Nikki de Gruchy, meeting many fellow artists, forย  four days receiving a lot of visitors from different countries and many good friends, walking through the narrow streets and on the steep stairs of Cรณmpeta: ย  what a lot of impressions to take in!ย  Now looking back I can say, it was a great event and I am very happy I was a part of it! And very lucky that I had a lot of support! Many thanks to Lieuwke Loth and the team to making this Art Walk Cรณmpeta possible!ย

Wonder of transformation – from old to new!

Esta pagina tiene Google-Translate en la barra lateral

I had to reorganize my studio – space was needed, a disturbing problem with many artist studios. So this was my opportunity to undertake a serious inspection of my collection of paintings. Some made me smile, they are still dear old friends and it was a very warm reconnection. Some clearly didn’tย  pass the check. I build a nice staple of “ready to be re-worked again”.

Reworking a painting is a tricky task. In the end it asks for a lot of boldness, courage and “letting go”. But paintings on this staple are not all boring but have some very nice parts.ย  So I am tempted to “save” these parts – against all experience that for me and my style of painting it is nearly impossible to create an authentic, lively and balanced abstract work while trying to save some parts. Working on an older painting of course keeps also some risk: You never know if you will manage to make it a better painting despite all your workโ€ฆ..soย  the question, did I succeed?

As an abstract painter I work with many layers to create depth in a painting without constructing something like a perspective. So working on an older work is interesting as it always has in store already quite some layers and if I don’t whiten the whole painting the previous painting will speak through the new layers. Here I show you some of my re-worked paintings of the last months. Do you see the connection?

Tapp to enlarge.

“Metamorphosis” had already gone through some changes, but I was not too pleased with the result. So after some months I said “Good bye” to the Metamorphosis and it developed into a “Wonder Flower”. This one I did without trying to “save” parts, but elder parts very nicely fit with the newer parts.

The “Vancouver service street” holds nice memories but it lost in the “survival of the best”. It has undergone a very bold change. You see the influence of the under laying layers? How do they influence the new composition?

Tapp to enlarge.

This one gave meย  a hard time as I liked so many featured in it but never could sort out how to make it a complete painting. So I loved it and I hated it. I started this work in Tuscany, where I spend several summer painting. Definitely I was in love with the upper part. I fought to keep the red one, but it turned out to look like a big whale…so it had to go, so sorry dear red! ย  Here you see, which parts survived and which not.

Tapp to enlarge.

These is also a painting from my “Fluid Periode” which I looked at and I liked it but never felt it was finished. But as I liked the flow and the style and the colours , I didn’t want to destroy it, so I did only little changes, like deepening some darker parts, darken with a pink the very light part at the left and interrupt the light horizontal part by taking down a little bit the green. Very small differences that made a notable difference to me. Now it has become a harmonic painting for my taste. What do you think?

If you want to see more changes – look at these paintings in a room!
